So is it correct to describe the bar mitzvah as a cultural or religious rite of passage from childhood to adulthood? It seems as if it brings the child into the community as one who is now subject to the Law, and typically includes preparation with the handing on of knowledge? Am I understanding correctly?

I see you mentioned bar mitzvah as a right of passage. There is a bit of a misunderstanding about what exactly a bar mitzvah is. It’s is not the celebration or Torah reading/teaching, it is the boy, who on his 13th Jewish birthday becomes a legal adult in the eyes of the Law, regardless of whether he had any event to mark it, and the term actually means person, who is subject to the Law. Preparation to become a bar/bat mitzvah begins at three when a child begins his or her Jewish education, and those specific bar/bat mitzvah preparation classes held in many synagogue are several years too late as a starting point.

It gave each of us time to reflect on our life and to link generations as we face the future together. It not only helped the young understand their role in family and society, but it gives parents the opportunity to focus on what is important to pass on to their sons. It also gave this old man hope and encouragement.
